Sound on. It starts quietly.

For parents

What it is

A farm with twelve animals: a cow, sheep, pig, horse, duck, hen, dog, cat, goat, donkey, rooster and frog. Tap one and it moves and makes its sound, and its name appears in big letters so you can read it aloud together. Swipe, or tap the arrows, to walk from the barn to the pond to the field.

Find the animal is a gentle game for older toddlers. A picture of an animal appears in the corner and you hear it; your child taps the matching animal for a little celebration. A tap on a different animal just plays that one. There are no timers, no scores and nothing to lose.

It's a toy to play with together, not a lesson, and we don't claim it teaches anything.

Grown-ups button

Volume, the game choice, full screen, sharing and the way out all sit behind the small lock in the top corner. Tap it, then press and hold the round button that appears for 3 seconds, with one finger kept still. A second finger, a resting hand, a slide off the button or any key cancels the hold, and the button sits in a different corner each time, so random taps and presses rarely get through. Every link on this page asks for the same hold and then asks you to confirm. Share and More toys in the menu ask you to confirm too.

No lock like this stops a child who has watched you and copies you. To lock the screen properly, see the next section.

The sound starts at a gentle level, and you can change it in the menu. A quieter setting is remembered for next time. A louder one lasts until you close the page, so every visit starts gently.

Keep your child in the toy

A web page can't block a phone's own Back gesture, Home button or app switcher. On a computer, while the farm is on it asks the browser to ignore the usual keyboard and mouse shortcuts for Back and reload, but no page can block every shortcut, such as closing the window or switching apps. To lock a phone or tablet to this page:

iPhone or iPad (Guided Access):

  1. Open Settings, tap Accessibility, tap Guided Access, then turn on Guided Access and set a passcode.
  2. Open this page and tap Play.
  3. Triple-click the side button (the top button on an iPad, or the Home button if yours has one), tap Guided Access if asked, then tap Start.
  4. To finish, triple-click the same button, enter your passcode, and tap End.

Android (app pinning):

  1. Open Settings and find App pinning (under Security, or Security & location, then Advanced, depending on the phone). Turn it on.
  2. Open this page and tap Play.
  3. Swipe up to the middle of the screen and hold to see your recent apps (or tap the Overview button). Tap the browser's icon at the top of its window, then tap Pin.
  4. To unpin, swipe up and hold (or touch and hold Back and Overview), then enter your PIN if asked.

Screen time

The American Academy of Pediatrics suggests keeping screen time limited for children aged 2 to 5, and using it together with them when you can. Its parent site, HealthyChildren.org, has more, including a free family media plan.

Privacy

There are no accounts, no cookies, no analytics, no ads and no tracking, and nothing your child does leaves the device. The page and its sound files come from our own site, and it never contacts any other. The only thing it saves is the volume setting, kept in this browser for next time (a setting louder than the starting level is not kept).

Sounds and pictures

The sounds are real recordings that their recordists released into the public domain (CC0) on Freesound; we trimmed them and evened out their loudness. The drawings are our own. Sound credits are at the bottom of the page.

Questions

No sound on an iPhone?

Turn the volume up with the side buttons, and check the Ring/Silent switch (or Silent mode in Control Centre). Then tap an animal again.

Does it work offline?

Once the page has loaded and you've tapped Play, the sounds are in memory, so a lost connection doesn't stop the play. A fresh visit needs a connection.

Which age is it for?

We made it for children of about 2 to 4, played with a grown-up. Younger children enjoy the sounds too; Find the animal suits children who already know a few animals.
