Knock mode (microphone)

Hears a knock on your desk or laptop, a clap, or other sharp sounds such as a loud word. The sound is checked on this device and is never recorded or sent anywhere.

Space hits. A S D give soft, medium and big hits. 1–4 switch packs.

How to play

Tap Start and turn your volume up. On iPhone, tap Allow when asked about motion, so Slap! can feel your hits.
Hit your phone. A firm tap on the back, a slap on the screen or a quick shake all count. Harder hits make bigger sounds: a soft tap goes bonk, a big one goes OW!
On a laptop or desktop, click the blob (the middle gives the biggest hit), press Space, or turn on Knock mode and knock on your desk.
Make it yours. Pick a sound pack, set the pitch and room, then press Share. The link keeps your setup, so whoever opens it hears the same thing.

Tips

Build a combo. Hits less than 0.7 seconds apart build a combo. The sounds climb in pitch as it grows, sparkles join at 12, and you get a fanfare at 10, 25, 50 and 100.
Too jumpy or not reacting? Move the Sensitivity slider. Lower it if Slap! goes off when you just pick your phone up; raise it if gentle hits don't count.
Drum on it. In the Drums pack, soft hits play the hi-hat, medium hits the snare (with tom fills during a combo) and big hits a kick with a crash. On a keyboard, A, S and D play them.
Be kind to your phone. A firm tap is plenty. Hold it securely, or tap it while it lies on a bed or cushion. Please don't throw it.

Questions

Does Slap! record me or send my data anywhere?

No. Knock mode only runs if you turn it on and allow the microphone. Slap! checks how loud the sound is, right in your browser, to spot sharp sounds like a knock. Nothing is recorded, saved or uploaded, and the same goes for motion readings. Your best score is kept only in this browser's storage, and there are no cookies or analytics. See the privacy policy.

Why is there no sound on my iPhone?

Browsers only play sound after you tap the page, so tap Start first and turn the volume up. If it's still silent, check the Ring/Silent switch: some iOS versions keep web pages quiet in silent mode. Slap! asks iOS to play it like media so it can be heard, which may pause music playing in another app.

Can I slap my laptop?

Most laptops don't share motion with web pages, so Slap! listens instead: turn on Knock mode and knock or tap on the laptop's case or the desk next to it. Clicking the blob and pressing Space work too.

How does the 10-second challenge work?

Press 10-second challenge; your first hit starts the clock. Every hit in the next 10 seconds counts, from any input. Your best score stays on this device, and Share score makes a link that dares a friend to beat it.

Are these recorded sound effects?

No. Every sound is synthesized live in your browser with the Web Audio API, from oscillators, noise and filters. There are no audio files at all.
